The convention was you got to name a route if you were the first person to do it - Brian clocked up several such rock climbing routes. It was a way of life to him and many of his climbing friends site him as being a great inspiration. He never complains about his lot and faces this disease with stoicism, still doing what he can to help others. He most certainly deserves a second chance a cure would give him.
